Alicia and Cohen Combat Crohn's and Colitis - TOGETHER!
I've never met the Martyniuk Family. Nadine, Brad and their son Cohen are essentially strangers. Connected simply by a mutual friend who shared a post on Facebook. Or maybe connected less simply by the fact that two families, previously unknown to each other, have shared a similar journey with a child since the age of 10. In our family, that child was me. I started my journey with inflammatory bowel disease at the same age as Cohen began his. We differ in the fact that Cohen has Crohn's Disease and I have Ulcerative Colitis. We are alike in that the Children's Hospital of Manitoba became a mainstay in our lives. We are alike in the tests, diagnostics, the doctors, the pains, the uncertainty, missing friends, school and family events because of a disease fighting against our bodies.
It's the most simple yet the most powerful part of being human. We wake up everyday with the ability to make a concious choice in everything that we do. We are given the chance to decide how we treat others, how we treat the world around us, and what we do with the bumps in the road that are thrown at us along the way. Nadine, Brad and Cohen Martyniuk made the concious choice to do something about the struggles their family has faced. They chose to speak up and to fight for a cause that will certainly benefit their own family but more importantly will benefit every child and family that has to travel a similar path that they have.
I've volunteered with Crohn's and Colitis Canada for over 15 years. I've battled Ulcerative Colitis for 21 years. I can't remember how many colonoscopies or doctors appointments I've had or how many medications I've put in my body. I can however remember the name of almost every doctor, nurse, family, friend or stranger who has been a part of my journey with this disease. I now add the Martyniuk family to that list. The brave family who decided to make the concious choice to make a difference. So now, I ask you to make a concious choice to support this cause. If you have the means to do so, please consider donating to Cohen or myself as we now battle this TOGETHER. The Martyniuk Family is raising money to purchase a new ultrasound machine that can help diagnose and treat children with Inflammatory Bowel Diseases. The machine costs $75,000. That's it... $75,000. The value that a $75,000 machine can bring to the children and families that are going through the diagnosis and treatment of these painful diseases however is immeasurable. If you're not able to donate, please make the conscious choice to share these stories. Awareness and conversations are how campaigns like this spread. TOGETHER we can accomplish anything! Crohn's Disease will certainly not define Cohen Martyniuk or his parents Nadine and Brad. What they do with Crohn's Disease, by starting campaigns like this will. Thank you Martyniuk Family for having the strength and compassion to start the process of making it easier on the next. The path you're creating will leave a lasting impression!

The Mission of the Children's Hospital Foundation of Manitoba is to be an independent agency whose puspose is to raise and distribute funds for the advancement of knowledge and care in the fields of child health research and, thereby, contribute to the improved health of children everywhere.
Established in 1971, the Children's Hospital Foundation works to support the special healthcare needs of children through reliable and consistent funding of pediatric medical research, as well as equipment and programs at Children's Hospital of Winnipeg.
Through the generosity of our donors and corporate supporters, we are able to commit millions of dollars each year to purchase equipment, support programs and fund important medical research which provides children and their families with hope for the one thing they need the most - a cure.
